Year 8 Mountain Biking
Dear Parents & Students,
Following your son’s request for Outdoor Education this year, I am pleased to invite him on to the mountain biking session. This is a very exciting activity for students to challenge and promote their self-confidence and self-esteem, provide problem solving opportunities and develop team working skills.
Please see your son’s allocated date and time on the email you had received with this link on.
The session will be based at Sandwell Valley County Park on forest trails, bridal ways and the mountain bike off road trail where students will learn riding off road in a safe environment. Students will be introduced to skills and techniques to overcome obstacles such as streams, rock gardens and steep descents as well as understanding personal safety, group management and the county side code. Students will also have the opportunity to work towards the KNSB Mountain Biking Awards.
Students will be transported in the school minibus and we will tow the bikes on our custom-built road trailer.
Students will have the opportunity to ride the school 14inch or 16inch frame size Carrera mountain bikes. If students would like to use their own bikes, please see the link below regarding equipment and safety gear requirements. All requirements must be fulfilled for students to use their own bikes for insurance and safety reasons.
A complete set of old clothes is recommended including gloves, socks, and shoes plus a towel to sit on whilst travelling back in the bus if the conditions are wet. It is important that students dress appropriately for the weather conditions on their activity day to ensure everyone has a good time. Please check the weather forecast to plan your attire. Due to safety reasons, students who are not dressed appropriately may not be able to take part.
Please supply a packed lunch and a large drink. Packed lunches are available for free school meal students. Students must bring a pair of gloves to ride in. Bike helmets and ruck sacks to carry lunches in on the ride will be supplied for the day.
Students are to meet at the outdoor education store room D 1.6, next to the canteen after assembly/registration (8:50am) and will return at approximately 3pm to wash the bikes and pack kit away.
Students will come to school wearing their biking clothes. (Please remember to bring a towel to sit on whilst travelling back.).
In order for your son to take part in this activity, we will need the online medical consent form (link below) submitted before his allocated date.
To maintain this wonderful opportunity for our students, it is essential we have contributions from families. Parental contributions help support the running and upkeep of the outdoor adventure programme as well as providing outdoor learning opportunities across the curriculum for all students.
Contributions are to be made via ParentPay to the ‘Parental Contirbutions’ payment item.
If your son is unable to take this opportunity, then please let me know so we can reallocate the space.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me.
Thanks for your support.
Mr B Julian
Head of Outdoor Education.
